Sister Mariposa Patriota was created as an alter-ego for Apolonio in October 2010. She is a Fully Professed Member of the Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, which is a LGBT Advocacy Group that is known for its in your face style of dress and charity work. The Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (LA-SPI) is part of an ever growing international movement that started on Easter Sunday in 1979, which consisted of 3 gay men wearing borrowed nun habits for a fun day out on the town. Little did they know that it would blossom into the colorful order that covers 17 States, and 9 Countries. (Feel free to click here to find a SPI Order near you.) The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI), and its members, have been notable for many ties to the roots of the LGBT Movement, such as the creation of the first LGBT Pride Flag, the first AIDS Fundraiser, and the first plain language AIDS pamphlet. The also have been known to ruffle a great many feathers, especially in the Catholic Church as they are an Order of Men & Women, Gay & Straight, who dress in full nun habits, and do the work associated with the title. In December of 1995, the SPI movement reached the Los Angeles Basin, where it has grown to be a very integral part of the local community, especially the LGBTQ Community.
The SPI Mission Statement is: “We exist as an order of 21st century nuns dedicated to the promulgation of omniversal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. Our ministry is one of public manifestation and habitual perpetration.”
When Apolonio moved to Los Angeles, CA from San Antonio, TX, one of the first events he attended was Long Beach Pride in May 2008. That is where he first encountered the colorful bunch of nuns that were there spreading joy. After doing my research, and getting to know some of the nuns, he decided to take up the calling to become a nun myself.
Jump back to October 2010, Mariposa, then a Postulant was debuted at Eagle LA for their Halloween party, where she started her journey of ministering to the community, and being that role model she never had growing up. Mariposa is very different from Apolonio. She has a very outgoing attitude, and can’t seem to get enough when it comes to spreading joy.
Here’s an excerpt from her Facebook profile:
“Over the years I have had the pleasure to meet so many fabulous people, and do some fabulous work to assist offers by spreading joy & rubbing out guilt. I’m also truly grateful & honored to have been a part of a fabulous group of queer nuns that work tirelessly to raise thousands of dollars throughout the year for the community in & around the Greater Los Angeles Area. I am a 21st Century Nun, learning the ways of the Order. Like the Sisters that came before me, I have dedicated my life to the promulgation of universal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. The ministry we share is one of public manifestation and habitual perpetration. This nun, took a vow of service to her community, and for some reason could not do the vow of celibacy. I tried and just couldn’t do it…”
You can find Mariposa in the local gay bars of Los Angeles, as she tries to find those lost souls out there, or you can find her fluttering in her patriotic glory in the streets of Los Angeles as she fights for full equality for all Americans.
